The Blue Jays were flying high last weekend after the men’s and women’s soccer teams won their games, leaving their opponents scoreless – and maybe even speechless.

The Lady Jays played with a powerful performance, shutting out St. Mary’s College of Maryland 3-0. This marks the second shutout win for the Lady Jays, and also improves their at-home record to 3-0-1.

They had a combined total of 29 shots, 12 of them on goal. Meanwhile, the St. Mary’s Seahawks had only three shots, one on goal. Seahawks goalie Audra Haines made two strong saves, but 17 minutes into the game, sophomore Leigh Ungerleider broke the ice, scoring first for the Lady Jays. This was her second goal of the season.

Just minutes later, senior Kristin Wilkinson dropped a corner kick to the feet of sophomore Marissa Lapinsky, who found a way to move the ball across the six and into the net. This was Lapinsky’s first goal of her career, and it moved the Lady Jays up another goal. By the 48th minute, senior Lydia Lawson found the back of the net for the seventh time in six games.

First-year goalkeeper Trinity Soto had an impressive game, only needing to make a save one time. She was named the Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. Currently, her save percentage is up to 0.848, putting her third overall in the Landmark.

The Lady Jays will play their True Blue game against Susquehanna University this Saturday at 4 p.m.

Moving onto the men’s game, where the Blue Jays played every second against Arcadia University. They would go onto win 2-0, but not without a scoreless first half. But the first goal? Talk about epic.

The Blue Jays had a corner kick in the 68th minute of the game. Senior JD Haaf and first-year Tate Mohney were able to play the ball quickly, whipping a cross from the left side. Senior Cameron Shiva capitalized, scoring the first goal of the game. Sophomore Thomas Knox secured their hold over Arcadia after scoring in the 77th minute. But the play was hectic, as Knox faced off with the Arcadia goalkeeper Jake Varrato in a 50-50. He won, claiming his first goal of the season. Mohney and Haaf cashed in assists as the Blue Jays got their third consecutive victory.

First-year goalkeeper Kelvin Del Cid was also named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, recording two shutouts with Alvernia and now Arcadia. Mohney said after the game that he has a great feeling about the team’s mindset.

“After winning three games in a row, we’re starting to settle in. Our captains are doing a great job at getting the rookies to perform at their best and relax on the ball,” Haaf said. “We are Blue Jay brothers and will continue to fight for each other on the pitch.”

The Blue Jays’ next game is Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. vs. Susquehanna University.
