The game quickly began in Elizabethtown College’s favor, as junior attacker Finn Kristan wasted no time setting the tone. Just 75 seconds into the contest, Kristan found the back of the net to give the Blue Jays an early spark. Building on that momentum, Etown continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the first quarter. Precise ball movement and strong off-ball cuts created scoring opportunities that seniors Jay Rodriguez and Brent Wehland capitalized on, each adding a goal to extend the lead.
Beyond their offensive efficiency, the Blue Jays showcased a disciplined defensive effort in the opening frame. They forced Washington College into contested perimeter shots, disrupted passing lanes and executed clean clears to transition the ball. Their ability to control possession and dictate tempo allowed Etown to close the first quarter with a confident edge.
The second quarter shifted to a more defensive battle. Both teams increased their physicality, attacking the net with urgency but struggling to convert opportunities. Turnovers began to plague both offenses, as rushed passes and tightened defensive coverage stalled possessions. Despite the choppier pace of play, Wehland managed to break through midway through the quarter, tallying his second goal of the afternoon and extending Etown’s advantage to 4–1. Though chances remained limited for both sides, the Blue Jays entered halftime maintaining control.
Coming out of the break, Washington showed renewed energy in the third quarter. While Etown continued to battle hard, missed opportunities and unforced errors allowed Washington to gradually chip away at the lead. Six minutes into the quarter, senior Cam Carrigan scored off an assist from junior Reeve Hargrave, cutting the deficit to two and shifting the momentum. Just three minutes later, junior Peyton Gestole capitalized on another offensive push, narrowing Etown’s lead to a single goal and setting up a tense final period.
The fourth quarter delivered an intense back-and-forth battle. Just 90 seconds into the frame, Washington completed the comeback, tying the game. Etown responded quickly, however, as junior Tristan Coleman broke through the defense to reclaim the lead and briefly restore momentum for the Blue Jays.
That goal would prove to be Etown’s final offensive statement. Washington surged in the closing minutes, stringing together four unanswered goals while tightening up defensively and limiting Etown’s scoring opportunities. Their disciplined defensive stand and efficient late-game offense ultimately sealed the victory, overcoming the early deficit and handing the Blue Jays a hard-fought loss.
Despite the setback, the Blue Jays demonstrated flashes of strong offensive chemistry and defensive discipline, particularly in the first half. They will look to regroup and maintain consistency across four quarters as they prepare for their next matchup. Etown aims to bounce back on Feb. 28 when they face Swarthmore College.
