Men’s and women’s swim dominate over Hallo-weekend

This Saturday, Oct. 28, both Elizabethtown College men’s and women’s swim teams beat Susquehanna University in their Hallo-weekend duel, 133-79 and 110-104 respectively. The teams are now both 3-0 overall and 2-0 within the Landmark Conference, having also beaten Immaculata University and Goucher College. The Jays will battle Cabrini University this coming Saturday, Nov. 4, where they’ll hopefully keep their winning streak going.

The men’s team put on a dominating performance this Saturday. The meet began with excitement with Etown winning the 200-medley relay 1:40.30 to 1:40.64, with senior Dylan Fitzgerald, Connor Oswald, sophomore Austin Smith and junior AJ West clocking in that narrow win. Sophomore Leif Hoffman won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:32.77. In the 200 freestyle, West took second and Fitzgerald took third. Smith won the 50 freestyle at 22.91 with junior Liam Quick taking third.

In the 200 Individual Medley, Hoffman racked up another first place win with a time of 2:08.17. Etown continued to dominate the meet, with Smith coming in first and West coming in second in the 100 butterfly. Junior Franky Swain won Etown another first place with a time of 57.41 in the 100 backstroke; Fitzgerald added on to this win, coming in third. Hoffman snagged first place in the 500 freestyle at 5:09.91; juniors Joshua McQueen and Robert Midura finished second and third, coming in at 5:31.13 and 5:42.63 respectively. The Jays took first and second in the 100 breaststroke, with Oswald taking first at 1:63.02 and senior Alex Waskiewicz coming in second at 1:04.05.

The results of the women’s side ended up coming down to the final relay of the day. The meet started with our Jays: senior Maddey Brelsford, sophomore Kortny Green, first-year Megan Benson and senior Sarah Marston, taking second in the 200-medley relay at 2:01.62. Sophomore Hailey Poulus and first-year Katie Midura took first and second place in the 1000 freestyle, swimming an 11:51.71 and a 12:13.84 respectively. Sophomore Kaylee Blair won the 200 freestyle for the Jays at 2:03.05. Marston won the 50 freestyle with junior Gracie Harding taking third. Harding went on to win the 100 freestyle at 58.22 followed by junior Olivia Hillman in third.

In the 100 backstroke, Brelsford and sophomore Emma Sabalaske took second and third. Blair added another first place to the Jays scoring, swimming a 5:32.43 in the 500 freestyle. Sabalaske and Green snagged another 2-3 finish for the Jays in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a 1:13.44 and a 1:13.48. Hillman, Blair, Harding and Marston came through in the final relay, winning the 400 freestyle at 3:49.14, beating out their opponents by seven seconds.

As a whole, it was a successful weekend for the Jays as they continued to boost their record, both overall and in conference. Hopefully, they take this win and carry the good vibes onwards as they face Cabrini on the 4th; this will be a tri-meet for the girls’ side. Go Jays!
