Blue Jay’s basketball senior day ends with a tough loss

On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Elizabethtown College men’s basketball team hosted Wilkes University at Thompson Gymnasium in a matchup that quickly developed into a thrilling, high-energy contest. With conference standings tightening late in the season, both teams entered the game knowing the importance of every possession, and the intensity was evident from the start.

Prior to the game, the Blue Jays took time to recognize the seniors on their roster as part of Senior Day celebrations. The honored players included Reese Ziegler, EJ Finney, Austin Finarelli, Ben Stanton and Augie Brody, all of whom have played important roles in shaping the program over their collegiate careers. Family, friends and teammates gathered to celebrate the seniors’ contributions before the focus shifted fully to the action on the court.

Wilkes struck first when senior Colin Ackerman scored on a strong drive into the paint for an early layup. However, the Blue Jays wasted little time responding. Senior Augie Brody quickly energized the home crowd by knocking down a three-pointer, giving Etown a one-point lead and setting the tone for a dominant stretch of play.

Fueled by the momentum, the Blue Jays went on a scoring run, putting up 27 additional points over the next 10 minutes while also tightening their defense. Etown forced several tough shots and limited Wilkes’ opportunities, allowing the home team to build a commanding 30–16 lead midway through the half.

Wilkes, however, refused to let the game slip away. As the half progressed, they began finding success through defensive stops and efficient scoring in transition. By converting layups and capitalizing at the free-throw line, Wilkes steadily chipped away at the deficit. Despite the surge, the Blue Jays maintained a slim advantage heading into halftime, with the scoreboard reading 46–42.

The second half opened with both teams showing aggression, but Wilkes made the first move as senior Jack Argento converted a layup to narrow the gap even further. Etown quickly countered when sophomore Anthony Lilly finished a layup assisted by senior EJ Finney, keeping the contest tight as both squads traded baskets.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued throughout the second half, with neither team able to gain clear control. Momentum swung repeatedly as players on both sides delivered key defensive stops and timely shots. Wilkes gained a slight edge at the 11:09 mark after converting two free throws following a foul by Etown sophomore Zuri Harris, setting the stage for a tense finish.

The teams remained within four points of each other as the final minutes ticked away. In the closing twenty seconds, Wilkes secured the win at the free-throw line, knocking down four crucial shots while the Blue Jays were unable to answer on the offensive end. The contest ultimately ended with an 81–74 Wilkes victory.

Following the loss, the Blue Jays now stand at 16–7 overall with a 9–7 record in Landmark Conference play. They will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on Catholic University in their next conference matchup.
