Athlete of the Week: Ethan Scott

Ethan Scott is a sophomore on Elizabethtown College’s men’s volleyball team. He has been playing volleyball since he was 14 years old, and he chose to play l because his older brother played it for many years. He hopes to become a better volleyball player than his brother.

When asked what he loves most about the sport he replied, “The competitive aspect of it.” Scott went on to express how he appreciates the friendships that he has made through playing the sport. After transferring from Thiel College, he was able to build lifelong friendships with others here at Etown.

Scott decided to transfer to Etown to play volleyball because our Division III sports program is one of the best in the country. Now, he has the opportunity to play against some of the top Division III teams in the United States. He added, “I also thought I could improve the team.” This shows his passion for wanting to advance the team.

On Etown’s men’s volleyball team, Scott is a setter. This is his favorite position to play on the court. Volleyball is made up of a series of bumps, sets and spikes. Scott’s role as a setter is the bond between bumping and spiking. Furthermore, Scott’s favorite play is a reverse sweep. He explained this as an opposing team winning two games and Etown winning three games following that, to beat the opposing team by one point. Volleyball is won by the best of five games.

Scott is a sophomore marketing major pursuing a career in sales. Scott is able to balance sports, academics and friendships by using his free time to complete schoolwork. After he was asked if he thinks that doing sports in college makes classes easier or harder, he responded, “I can see it going two ways. One, the less time you have to study reflects on your test scores. Or two, you work better under pressure which in turn may cause you to be more productive.” Scott does not have a strong opinion on whether playing a sport in college helps or hurts your academics.

Occasionally there is an away game and depending on where the team travels to play volleyball, the team may be sleep deprived for the next day. Their games typically begin at 7 p.m. and do not end until 12 p.m.-1 a.m. Scott says this does not affect his ability to complete his schoolwork. However, when participating in a sport Scott constantly has a full schedule for each day.

Etown’s men’s volleyball team’s season ended on April 4. Scott looks forward to continuing to participate on the volleyball team for the duration of his college career. He would like to play volleyball in his free time or recreationally following his graduation.
