Student Senate

Student Senate held their weekly meeting Thursday, Oct. 15 over Zoom.

Vice President for Student Life Dr. Celestino Limas began administrative reports by introducing the latest hire, Associate Director of Community Living Jenn Azevedo.

Limas also spoke about wearing appropriate costumes for Halloween, offering himself as a person that students can reach out to with questions regarding their costume.

Assistant Director of Community Living Rina Carpenter spoke about upcoming Office of Student Activities events. They include pumpkin painting Oct. 24, a showing of “Coco” on Oct. 28 and a showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” Oct. 31 in partnership with the Intellectual Film Club.

While there wasn’t a representative for Counseling Services and Student Health, senior Jessie Kasper asked if remote students out of state can still schedule counseling appointments. Director of Disability Services Lynne Davies said that she “can’t speak much to it,” but there may be legal issues with some states. She encouraged the student to reach out to Director of Counseling and Health Needs Bruce Lynch for a better explanation.

During student comments, junior Rachel Skwirut expressed that some students are concerned that tours are still walking through the Baugher Student Center. Limas said that he will reach out to Vice President for Enrollment Management John Champoli to pass on the concerns.

Skwirut followed up with a concern that guests aren’t wearing masks or are wearing them incorrectly while outside on a tour. Junior Kyle Cappucci responded that all visitors are told to follow the guidelines we have in place.

During executive cabinet reports, senior Executive President Matthew Hetrick reminded senators that the Senior Leadership Team meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 12. All students are encouraged to attend via Zoom.

Publicity and Marketing Chair senior Gio Zapata announced that a costume contest will be held over Instagram Thursday, Oct. 29.

New business was dedicated to an Into the Streets presentation by senior Service Chair Makensie Kilby. This year, Into the Streets will be held across a week, starting Saturday, Oct. 24 and ending Friday, Oct. 30. She added that the Center for Community and Civic Engagement is collecting donations of plastic bags, old flannels, used towels, old t-shirts and used tennis balls.

The meeting finished with class updates. Sophomore class Vice President Jalen Belgrave spoke about the class of 2023’s diversity and inclusion advocacy project. He announced that they will be hosting a viewing of the “13th” documentary Friday, Nov. 13 in the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-being fieldhouse. They are also hosting a discussion Tuesday, Nov. 17 with a panel that includes President of the Lancaster NAACP branch Blanding Watson, Briana Pearson and Brandon Flood.

Student Senate meets weekly Thursdays at 3:45 p.m. over Zoom.
