Etown students Glide Into the Streets

Etown students Glide Into the Streets

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Elizabethtown College held its annual Into the Streets Fall Day of Service. This was a great way for students to be able to give back to the community around them by volunteering at locations all around the area.

The event, hosted by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE), proved to be a huge success. Students could volunteer to serve at individual locations or volunteer as groups. Many clubs and teams around campus volunteered as well.

This year, the swim team went to the Harrisburg Boys and Girls Club to help by cleaning the facilities. The jobs included organizing office files, sorting through old technology, gardening around the building and deep cleaning other rooms throughout the building including the art room and the game room.

The entire experience was said to be very enjoyable, people enjoyed getting to spend the day giving back to community along with teammates. Other members of the swim team expressed their feelings about the day’s activities. A member of the team who said, “I thought it was nice to give back to our local community and help people that need it, and also a great way to take part in team bonding.”

But the swim team was not the only group that volunteered. The baseball team took part in helping out at the Harrisburg Taking Strides event, which is a race that helps to raise awareness for breast cancer, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Another experience was helping to build homes at a nearby organization based out of Lancaster.  Overall, the event was a huge success, helping to fulfill the “educate for service” motto of Etown.
