Class Review: Intro to Procrastination

Class Review: Intro to Procrastination

Elizabethtown College has a wide range of classes. Most of these classes may seem a bit odd and some you may not even know about.

This class is often passed over during course selection as it may seem counterintuitive. COM123: Introduction to Procrastination is an elective offered in the communications department.

This class is held on Fridays from 6 p.m. until 8:50 p.m. as it was the latest possible time it could be scheduled. The Intro to Procrastination is designated for two hours and 50 minutes of class time once a week. However, it often only runs for about two hours, as our professor and students are always showing up late.

We are given one assignment every week, assigned at the end of class and due at the beginning of the next. However, you lose points if it gets turned in early or on time. This is the only class you will take that turning in assignments late will result in reward, rather than penalty.

For every homework assignment turned in on the last day of classes, five points of extra credit is rewarded.

In classic procrastination fashion, I waited too long to speak with the professor regarding this class, and he has yet to tell us his name.

However, I can say he seems passionate about the subject. For every class period, he has sat on his phone at the monitor with the same slide show titled “Welcome to Introduction to Procrastination” idling on the screen.

Our syllabus details our assignments, their worth and their due dates. This is the only way we are able to determine what we are meant to do, as our professor puts it off until he has no time to explain.

Unfortunately, we missed the first two weeks of assignments as our professor put off publishing it to Canvas, not that the course itself had yet been posted.

For students known for their procrastination, I believe this is just the class for you. You will thrive in an environment which allows you to do nothing, putting off your assignments and coursework until the last possible moment but facing no consequences.

For those who just want an easy class to fulfill a few extra credits, this class may not be the one for you. This class is worth four credits, but doesn’t count for any core requirements, it doesn’t even count as an elective.

However, it is a good opportunity to carve out time to sit and work on assignments for other classes you have been putting off. I use the class time to write papers and do research. While most sit on their phone, others recognize the true purpose of this course.

This course is designed to bore you, you are forced to find something to fill the time. While many will just fill the time with TikToks and computer games, some recognize that this class is an opportunity to succeed.

Whether you want a class to waste the time and fulfill some credits, this is the one for you. However, if you want a class to give you a dedicated opportunity to work for other classes, and not worry about the fourth on your roster, this class is the perfect one for you.
