February’s Super Bowl LV was arguably one of the greatest games of the season. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the quarterbacks’ fifth head-to-head game. Brady had beaten Mahomes in October of 2018 when he still played for the New England Patriots and again later in January of 2019. Mahomes came back the next two seasons to beat Brady in December of 2019 and again in November of 2020.

For both Brady and Mahomes, Super Bowl LV was a personal tie breaker since they had a tally of two wins each against the other. However, a win in the Super Bowl for Mahomes would add him to the very short list of quarterbacks to beat Brady in the NFL’s biggest and most important game.

A win for Brady would give him his seventh Super Bowl win. He had been to the Super Bowl nine times with the New England Patriots and won six of the games. A seventh win in his tenth Super Bowl appearance with a new team alone would have been an astonishing feat. However, in addition to these factors, Brady ditched his retirement plans to play for the Buccaneers at the age of 43. Because of his age, this is unheard of in the NFL.

By now it is common knowledge that Brady and the Buccaneers did in fact beat Mahomes and the Chiefs. The game ended in a blowout with a score of 31-9. Some fans claimed the game was already over and the winner determined by the end of the second quarter when the score was 21-6 Buccaneers.

After the game Mahomes said in an interview, “We can’t let this define us. We have to continue to get better going into next year and prepare ourselves to hopefully be in this game again…I think the best thing about it is the guys we have have the leadership ability to be even better next year.”

“I think what our defensive line did last night was incredible,” Brady said in a press conference the day after the big game. Brady, along with many sports analysts, credit the Buccaneers win and dominance over the Chiefs not only to Brady’s offense, but the strength and performance of their defense.

Brady plans to return with the Buccaneers for the 2021 season and is optimistic that the team will return stronger than before. Much like Brady, Mahomes is looking forward to the 2021 season and working with the Chiefs to strengthen their team.
