Some Elizabethtown College athletes, including most of those who play spring sports, have been fortunate enough to practice in person and participate in games, matches and meets both on campus and away.
While most of the teams’ seasons still look different from years past due to COVID challenges, the overwhelming majority of student athletes say that they are just glad to be playing their sport.
One challenge students faced up until recently was that although they were still able to participate in practices and compete against other schools, spectators were not allowed to attend sporting events. However, as of Monday, April 5, students, parents and community members will be permitted to attend outdoor sporting events.
Previously, spectators were prohibited due to the Landmark Conference Council of Presidents’ decision. The conference is now allowing schools to put in place their own guidelines, and Etown students are pleased with the College’s decision to allow spectators.
“I am very happy that spectators are [now] allowed,” sophomore pole vaulter Avery Roberts said. “I think a lot of my friends are going to come and watch… competing without spectators is just a weird experience. I’m glad people can come and see us do what we do best.”
However, there still is one restriction that some students are frustrated about. “I’m glad that spectators are allowed at sporting events, but I’m upset that [they are] only allowing two spectators per athlete,” first-year pole vaulter Jordan Figueroa said. “I do think a lot of students and parents will take advantage of the opportunity, though.”
All in all, students are excited to attend sporting events, and student athletes are excited for the opportunity to have their friends, siblings and parents cheer them on for the first time in over a year.
