Blue Jays fall short against Scranton

The Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team faced another challenging Landmark Conference opponent on Saturday, Oct. 10, taking on the Scranton Royals at Ira R. Herr Field. Despite a strong defensive effort and several opportunities to equalize the contest, the Blue Jays fell to the Royals in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Scranton entered the contest with an impressive record and wasted little time establishing an offensive presence. In just the third minute, Royals midfielder Nick Suraci found the back of the net, giving Scranton an early 1-0 advantage and putting the Blue Jays under pressure.

Following the early setback, Etown attempted to regain control of the match. However, Scranton continued to dominate offensive opportunities throughout the opening half, keeping much of the pressure on the Blue Jays’ defense.

The Royals nearly extended their advantage in the 15th minute when Luke Roberto fired a shot toward the bottom center of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Sumner responded with an impressive save, preventing Scranton from doubling its lead.

Etown generated its first scoring opportunity shortly afterward when Junior Jason Stark attempted a shot in the 15th minute. However, his attempt sailed over the crossbar, leaving the Blue Jays still scoreless.

Scranton continued to challenge the Etown defense throughout the remainder of the first half. Sumner recorded two additional saves, stopping attempts from Matt Capretto and Caden O’Connell to keep the Royals within striking distance.

Despite Scranton outshooting Etown 8-1 during the opening 45 minutes, the Blue Jays entered halftime trailing by just one goal.

In the 62nd minute, Stark created another opportunity for Etown, but his shot traveled wide of the net. Scranton responded by continuing to pressure the Blue Jays’ defense, earning several corner kicks throughout the second half.

Despite the Royals’ continued offensive presence, Etown’s defense managed to prevent Scranton from extending its lead, keeping the contest within reach heading into the final ten minutes.

The Blue Jays nearly found their equalizer in the 81st minute when sophomore Quinn Erb fired a shot toward the bottom-left corner of the net. However, Scranton goalkeeper Justin Scavalla made the save, preserving the Royals’ one-goal advantage.

Just seconds later, graduate student Gui Yamamoto attempted another shot, but it sailed wide of the goal.

Despite their late offensive push, the Blue Jays were unable to break through Scranton’s defense before the final whistle.

Scranton finished the contest with a 12-5 advantage in total shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sumner recorded three saves for Etown, while Scavalla finished with one save to secure the shutout.

The loss moves Elizabethtown to 5-4-4 overall and 1-1-2 in Landmark Conference play. The Blue Jays look to bounce back against Catholic on Wednesday.
