A brief history of Etown’s baseball field

Lots of people go out and watch Elizabethtown College baseball, but what not many people know about the baseball team is that there is a backstory to the baseball field. Like so many buildings across campus, it should come as no surprise that the Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium is named after somebody. Kevin Scott Boyd was a huge fan of baseball, and he also went to Etown as a student. He graduated and then unfortunately passed away from a rare digestive disorder. Boyd played for the Blue Jays from 1996-98 and was a member of Etown’s 1997 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship team. His life was cut tragically short in 1999 at age 25.

Boyd was an avid fan and player, so to celebrate his memory, friends, family, community members and the College partnered with each other and came together to build the stadium in Boyd’s memory, a five-year project. This project is now the baseball field on campus that we know and love today. The first game after the stadium was completed was played on March 27, 2004 against Juniata College. Even though Etown lost with a final score of 8-7, it seems to still have been an exciting game.

Since its completion in late 2003 into early 2004, the Etown baseball team has flourished at Boyd Stadium, winning more than 60% of their games. The Blue Jays have finished with a winning home record 13 times in 17 seasons since moving to Boyd Stadium. They have compiled a 140 win and 91 loss record at the stadium entering 2021.

Boyd Stadium cost almost $1.1 million to build. As a result of that large sum of money, Boyd Stadium features home and visitor dugouts, a bleacher-style seating area behind home plate, a full nine-inning scoreboard in right field, home and visitor bullpens, equipment storage areas, a batting cage down the left field line, a press box and on-site restrooms. Many students and fans also take advantage of the elevated land out in right field and right center, often bringing their own seating to enjoy the game from that area. That seating area has a plaque that says, “Best Seat in the House.” Not only is it a great seat to watch a game, but it is also where, according to the plaque, Darvin stood in remembrance of his son as he watched this stadium become a reality.
