Student Senate met for their weekly meeting Thursday, October 20 at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212.
The meeting began with a special order presented by Project Manager of Facilities Management Department Jerry Schaber which focused on the launching of a sustainability dorm challenge.
Schaber presented energy comparisons statistics of each dorm per student. The focus of the competition would be to see what dorm building is able to lower their energy consumption per student the most. That building would then be awarded a prize. Details of this competition are still being worked out.
Next was the oath of office for a new Class of 2026 Representative.
Moving into administrative reports, Dean of Students & Executive Director for College Diversity, Equity and Belonging Nichole Gonzalez reported that the Etown Blue Print Program has officially been launched. There will be a launch event held Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. for those who sign up for the program.
The next Dessert Before Dinner with the dean will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 4:30 p.m. at the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-being fire pit.
Gonzalez also followed up with the testing of the blue lights around campus and found that they are tested monthly.
Associate Dean of Students for Community Living Jenn Crowder reported that overnight guests are now permitted. To have an overnight guest students must fill out the ‘overnight guest form’ located on Jayweb under housing.
RA/CA applications for the 2023-24 academic school year are now open on the HR website.
General Manager of Dining Service Austin Bender reported that the Jay Truck will be open on Oct. 22.
Center for Community and Civic Engagement Director Javita Thompson reported that Into the Streets is Saturday, Oct. 22 and all participants should have received email instructions for the day.
Moving into student comments and announcements, a concern was raised over how students lose financial aid scholarships when they become an RA and they are considering forming an ad hoc committee in order to work to address this issue.
Moving into Executive Cabinet reports, Executive President Madison Holmberg reported that Executive Vice President Jeremy Reel and herself will be attending the Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 21 on behalf of Student Senate.
Holmberg also reported the Class Senates are to begin preparing questions for the upcoming Senior Leadership Team meeting on Nov. 17.
Student Groups Chairperson Isaac Kraenbring reported that the next club council will be held Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in Gibble. It is mandatory that at least one representative from each club attends this meeting, and attendance is taken.
Publicity and Marking Chairperson Jessica Piergallini reported that the committee has been working to create a new logo for Student Senate. They are hoping within the coming weeks to have designs to present to the entire Senate in order to get feedback.
Moving into committee updates, Traditions Chairperson Abigail Lindsay thanked all those who helped in planning this year’s Homecoming. She also reported that the committee has begun to work on planning tree lighting which will be held Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.
Moving into class updates, Class of 2025 President Emma Sager reported that the Formal Jay theme will be ‘fairytales.’
A motion passed to push the new business order of reviewing a new amendment until next week’s meeting.
