Amidst a large-scale attack on Ukrainian airspace, Russia sent four drones directly into Poland, triggering their air force to react and other European Union member states like the Netherlands to reach out to help. This action has come as a complete surprise to most European countries who are still attempting to deal with the conflict in Ukraine and domestic issues at home. However, they may have been caught by surprise but not off-guard. European forces quickly mobilized and defended their fellow EU member’s borders and put up defenses late Wednesday afternoon in the event of further incursions.
According to NBC News, The Russian Defense Minister refuted claims that the attack was purposeful, and that there was no intent to target Polish targets. Russia is claiming that an accident occurred during the large-scale attack on Ukraine, and the drones had made an incursion into Poland. Coming from CBS News, President Donald Trump further backed this line of dialogue from his statement on Thursday, suggesting the attacks could have been an accident and mistake from Russia.
However, Poland as well as several other EU member states deny this reality, further insisting on this attack being a purposeful test of EU resistance. The attacks came during the eve of the State of the Union address from the President of the European Commission, striking when the entire Union would be addressing their defenses and capabilities. It also came after many months of standstill movement from the front with Ukraine, further aggravating the Kremlin and encouraging them to reassess their potential means of attack.
Since the attacks, Russia has begun a series of military exercises with Poland’s neighbor, Belarus, further increasing tensions. According to ABC News, Poland has since closed their border with Belarus to hopefully cut off that line in the event an invasion does occur. This also is because one of the drones had come from Belarusian airspace, which further shows their lean towards the Kremlin.
Poland has had a long history of invasions from Russia. Starting hundreds of years ago, the nation has been occupied multiple times by Moscow. This long-standing feud only fuels Polish fears more as they understand the threat Russia poses, and as the Polish member of parliament has made his rounds to different military installations, he has further cemented the Polish position to fight, according to ABC News. The rest of Europe stands with Poland, however, showing the continent- spanning union’s strength to resist a large-scale invasion from Russia and readiness at the smallest sign of conflict from President Vladimir Putin.
Even with Trump’s remarks, he still vows to remain in Europe as a strong and vivid military presence. This presence comes at a high cost for Europe, however, as he continues to request the EU to take on more of the cost. Still, the message has been sent to Putin that Europe stands strong, and any escalation to his war with Ukraine will not be tolerated. With Poland’s military expansion, it is only a matter of time before the three-year spanning war comes to an end.
