GTA VI faces yet another delay

GTA VI faces yet another delay

The highly anticipated next addition to the Grand Theft Auto Franchise, GTA VI, had its launch date delayed yet again. GTA V made massive waves in the video game industry, selling around 220 million copies. This placed it at #2 among the best-selling video games of all time. The eagerness of fans for its release cannot be understated, with the first trailer for GTA VI garnering 268 million views since its YouTube release in December of 2023. A second trailer released on May 6, 2025 has earned an additional 138 million views.

Originally slated for release in the fall 2025, the date has been officially pushed back twice. Rockstar Games, who publishes the popular franchise, first issued a statement in May stating the first delayed date to be May 26, 2026.

In this statement, Rockstar apologized, saying, “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

On Thursday, Nov. 6, Rockstar announced an additional push back to Nov. 19, 2026. In a published apology on Rockstar’s website, the company admitted “these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, saw its stock drop by 6% on the following day, largely attributed to the disappointing announcement.

The approximate six-month delay does come with some positives for the gaming company, however. A late November release allows for a massive flood of Christmas time spending, and of course, gives the company more time to polish any blemishes they expect the game to have.

The later release date also gives GTA VI the chance to be included in holiday bundles often floated by Consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This will hopefully avoid the trend many gaming studios have taken to, of releasing games before they are completely finished. This has left notable Triple-A games such as Cyberpunk 2077 with noticeable bugs, glitches, and other issues. Many would prefer a later release if it yields a better product; after all, the game is likely to be priced somewhere in the $70-$80 range.

The Delay has come as a shock to some, though to many, only as a mild disappointment. Delays for video game release have become all too common, with GTA being a notorious perpetrator. It will have been 13 years since GTA V was released if it does, in fact, release in November of 2026. The online community surrounding the franchise has long joked about how long it has been since the last release.

If GTA VI ends up pushed to 2027, not many will be surprised. In fact, the popular betting app Polymarket has multiple bets for events that could occur before the actual launch date. Rockstar has been known for its quality of games, with its colossal 2018 release of Red Dead Redemption 2 serving as a testament. A later release will likely allow for a better game. There remains no doubt that when GTA VI hits the shelves, the gaming world will be transformed by the awe it will inspire.
