Blue Jays test their knowledge at OSA Trivia Night

Trivia Nights are a beloved staple here at Etown. On Oct. 17 the Office of Student Activities (OSA) hosted the first trivia night of the fall semester in the Jay Lounge. ‘Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader’ was the theme for this trivia night. The night started at 8 p.m. and lasted roughly an hour. Conrad’s Corner was open for the event serving snacks, drinks and alcoholic beverages, for those who were of age, to students free of charge.

Students had to register beforehand in order to attend this event either through the OSA Instagram page or at the hub in the Brossman Commons (BSC). The maximum number of students in a group for this event was four. The small group size makes the competition fair for the night and gives teams an equal chance to win. It also gives students  a chance to connect with their peers.

Sofia Brzezicki, a junior occupational therapy student and a member of OSA, was the host for this event. “I am very excited to host tonight,” Brzezicki said. “This theme is going to be popular tonight because of that nostalgic feeling that the students are going to get. Roughly about eleven groups registered for tonight so I’m excited to see everyone have a good time.”

Brooke Hollinger, the assistant director of OSA, couldn’t pinpoint a most popular theme among students. She said “It’s very hard to say. We typically always have a full house with trivia nights. We try to host trivia nights in the KAV because of the number of student outcomes but it is too hard to get into due to the other number of activities that Etown offers.”

The themes for these popular nights are not chosen by OSA members. Instead, they are chosen by students who are interested in playing. “We have never repeated a theme in the history of Etown trivia,” said Hollinger. “We give students the ability to choose what themes they want, and they get to choose on our OSA Instagram page through a poll.”

First-year electrical engineering student Elliot Mentzer was very excited to attend his first trivia night. “I wanted to come to trivia night tonight because I love the competition and the competitive feeling that comes with these events, and also because I am doing it with my friends,” Mentzer said. When asked if he sees himself attending other OSA trivia nights in the future, Mentzer said, “Yes because it will be really fun and I love not only trivia but also testing my knowledge.”

There were prizes for the teams that showed that they know the most amount of knowledge. First place winners received a ‘BOO Basket’, which included chocolate, Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards, fuzzy Halloween socks and other Halloween related snacks.

Second place received a ‘Relaxation Basket’ which included coloring books, colored pencils and diamond paintings and third place winners received ‘Library Lock in’ bins which included granola bars, packs of gum, fidget toys and various stationery.

Trivia nights typically happen once a semester or once a year and are always held in the Jay Lounge. These nights are a good way to get students connected to each other and to impress themselves by seeing how well they know trivia. The room was so lively with laughter but also fierce with the competitive atmosphere.

The night was a huge success as a whole. If you missed this semester’s trivia night and are interested in attending the next one, be on the lookout for announcements through the OSA Instagram page and advertisements throughout campus.
