Leaving behind her hometown in Harrisburg, Lizzie Camilli, a first-year public relations major, came to Elizabethtown College looking for connections and quickly became immersed in campus life.
Camilli said she chose Etown for its small campus atmosphere, close-knit community and small class sizes.
“I wanted a smaller campus and smaller classes,” Camilli said. “And they also have a really good communication program.”
Camilli is a public relations major, drawn to the field because of her interest in social media and digital communications.
“I really like doing stuff with social media,” Camilli said.
That passion quickly turned into leadership on campus when she became the social media manager for ECTV, the college’s student-run television station, in her second semester on campus.
Her involvement with ECTV began almost immediately after arriving on campus. Spending time in the communications department lounge led her to meet other students in the department and later attend production nights.
However, Camilli’s campus involvement does not just end there. She is one of the college’s Blue Jay mascots, a peer mentor, a peer tutor and a member of the choir. In addition, she regularly attends Lighthouse, the on campus ministry group, and spends time at the gym nearly every day.
Balancing multiple commitments can be challenging for many students, but Camilli embraces the busy schedule. Her involvement reflects not only her energy, but also her desire to connect with others.
When asked about her biggest fear when coming to college, Camilli didn’t hesitate mentioning her friends and family back home.
“I think staying connected with people back home,” Camilli said.
Leaving behind familiar relationships back in her hometown was scary, but her deep involvement on campus has helped her to build and foster new ones.
College has also brought personal growth. Since arriving at Etown, Camili said she has made changes in her personal life and focusing on herself more. She now goes to the gym everyday and has gained more strength.
“I’ve gained a lot of muscle,” Camilli said with a laugh.
Her growth hasn’t just been physical. Camilli reflected on how her academic environment has helped shape her college experience as well. Camilli mentioned that in high school she had a choir teacher who was very hard on the students. At Etown, she found a different tone in the professors, especially in choir.
That shift helped make choir one of the more meaningful parts of her college journey. Despite her long list of roles and responsibilities on campus, Camilli describes herself very simply.
“I’m funny,” Camilli said. “I’m [also] nice. If somebody needs a person to talk to [I’m there].”
Her openness and approachability is a major factor in her involvement across many groups on campus. Whether she’s hyping up a crowd as the Blue Jay mascot, mentoring a fellow student, running ECTV’s social media account or singing in the choir, Camilli consistently shows up with a smile.
In a campus community that values connection, leadership and service, Camilli is working hard building a presence that reflects all three values. For her, Etown isn’t just a place to earn a degree, it’s a place to grow stronger, find her voice and help others do the same.
