Introducing Kyler Henne, a third-year criminal justice major here at Elizabethtown College.
Etown drew Henne in as he appreciated the academic programs and felt welcomed by students and staff from the moment he stepped foot on campus.
Henne loves everything there is about Etown. However, the connections and resources on campus are favorites of his. He feels as though the support system built by the campus community aids in guiding students in the right direction. “The amount of different connections and resources you make along the journey,” Henne said. “Having those support systems makes life so much easier with establishing your career, especially when guided in the right direction.”
Career wise, Henne strives for success in the courtroom. He takes Etown’s motto, “educate for service,” very seriously. “Helping people is a passion of mine,” Henne said. Although he came to Etown as an accounting major, his loss of interest and lack of a mathematical mindset caused him to change his path.
“I chose to study criminal justice because I have a big interest in becoming a lawyer,” Henne said. “What sparked this specific job interest is researching court documentaries and analyzing the specific role a lawyer plays in the justice system.”
Although he is torn between who he will represent, business and finance or criminal defense, Henne is not discouraged. Attending law school after graduation is the next step in his road to success. Beyond his career, he wants to be successful in life. Henne strives to have a career, financial stability and no regrets.
Henne said he wishes to “learn and grow as I continue my journey through education.” He is making the most of every situation and living life to the fullest. “I want to take opportunities that will benefit me in the long run,” Henne said. “What I want most in life is not to live with many regrets. I don’t want to look back and say ‘I wish I did this’ or ‘I wish I accomplished that.’ I want to be happy with how far I’ve come and learn to be proud of myself. I am hardworking and strive to be the best version of me I can.”
I think we can all take some inspiration from Henne’s mindset. Helping those around them see their potential is where his passions truly lie as he enjoys “motivating others to see their true potential and know that with a positive mind and outlook you can achieve those goals and dreams.”
However, Henne understands that keeping a positive mindset can be a struggle at times. College is stressful. Add to class, internships, jobs, social relationships and it can all be very staggering. Like many others, the battle with mental health has been an obstacle in Henne’s path. It may seem difficult, but this is an obstacle you can overcome. “It is vitally important that even though times may be rough and overwhelming, it’s always right to take some time for yourself,” Henne said. “Your health matters and I always reminded myself that I got this and to push through the negative thoughts and reach for the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Henne resides in Mount Joy. As a commuter student, he is not often found on campus if not in class. However, if your interest is sparked, he is the manager at Rita’s on Market Street. Stop by to say hello the next time you’re looking for a sweet treat and engaging conversation.
