Elizabethtown College has so many things to offer its students, but it can be challenging to navigate such busy schedules. Many students have jobs, internships, clubs, sports or other obligations on top of their high demanding class schedule. With that being said, it is important to have a few minutes to yourself a day. With that limited time, what do Etown students do with their free time?
Hannah Sharp, a junior biology secondary education major, says she spends her little free time sleeping or grabbing a coffee. Resting up and grabbing coffee is unsurprisingly common among fellow college students. Grabbing a drink from the Blue Bean and getting caught up on some conversations with friends is a personal favorite of mine.
Besides this, taking some time for yourself to catch up on some reading is another popular thing Blue Jays find themselves doing. Kelly Salvadore, a sophomore English literature major, says she spends her free time reading. Salvadore finds herself reading often between all of her classes, but falling into a good book for fun is always a great way to spend time. Personally, I love reading before bed to wind down. It helps me fall asleep faster.
Another reader on campus is junior English literature major Malorey Castle. Castle said she finds herself reading with her roommate’s cat laying with her. Nothing sounds more relaxing than that.
Michaela Taylor, a junior early childhood education major, is extremely busy this semester. Taylor is currently taking her Methods courses for her major which is part of the pre-student teaching process. She recommends using a mobile app called “Finch” to help maintain goals and keep organization.
“Sometimes I have a few goals set aside for hobbies like drawing, cooking, painting, and hiking,” Taylor said. “These are always fun to complete because I can remember how life can also be fulfilling outside the academic world.”
Taylor also finds herself caring for her furbabies, her guinea pigs and dog.
When I find myself with freetime, I love to go off campus and explore. I always enjoy checking out the local businesses and seeing what they have to offer. Additionally, I love going into Lancaster and going to Target.
I go to Target with my roommates which is not only fun, but I find it to be bonding. Sometimes, I get takeout and watch movies and try to see what other friends are free as well to come unwind.
If you ever find yourself bored with free time and want to try something new, I’d recommend looking into the local areas and seeing what might be available. Students are also encouraged to look at the Office of Student Affairs calendar and go to the many free events they host.
Free
There are countless things on and off campus to entertain yourself if you want to be social, but also remember it’s okay to take time for yourself too. Having time to rest, read, watch tv or practice a personal hobby are all great things to do with free time.
