Movies have been a comfort for many people over the years. Whether you like comedy, horror, sci-fi or one of the many other genres, there is something for everyone. With new technology, streaming movies has become more and more popular. Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ are just some of the popular streaming sites where people can reach their favorite movies at their fingertips.
The popularity of streaming services gives local movie theaters and drive-in theaters a run for their money. This made me wonder: do people prefer to stream movies or go out to the theater to watch?
Mallory Berkheimer, first-year early childhood education major, is someone who prefers the comfort of streaming movies. “Movie theaters can tend to be overstimulating—loud sound effects, others talking out of context and more,” Berkheimer said. “When you stream a movie, you can choose your location and who you’re with. You can also choose what snacks you want without having to think about adding it to a budget.”
Elle Egrie, first-year legal studies major, took a different stance. “Movie theater all the way. Yes, streaming is more accessible, cheaper and more comfortable, but you do not get the same experience that you get when you go to a movie theater,” Egrie said. “If I really wanted to go watch a movie, I would pick the movie theater over streaming anyday.”
Reese Mullin, first-year early childhood education major specializing in special education, also took Egrie’s side. “I prefer going to the movies because it is a chance to go out with friends,” Mullin said. “This way you do not have to worry about paying monthly for a streaming service.”
With a total of 18 to 12 votes, going to the theatre is much more popular than streaming it at home amongst the people who I spoke to.
I personally will always pick going to the movie theater to watch a movie than stream it at home. Yes, you do get the comfort of your own bed and unlimited drinks, but at the end of the day I do not think you are getting the experience that you should be getting when you watch from home.
Although the amount you have to pay for tickets and food is absurd, I love when you first walk in and you smell the buttery popcorn in the air or how you listen to the kids laughing and screaming. Sharing the experience of the movie and having the theater fill up with laughter with complete strangers is such a heartwarming feeling for me.
Streaming is not going anywhere, that is the truth. However, if you are looking for something fun to do during the weekend or need a mid-week pick-me-up, consider treating yourself to your local movie theater with your favorite snacks and the comfiest blanket you own.
