Debate of the Week: Instagram Reels or TikToks?

Debate of the Week: Instagram Reels or TikToks?

In a time where almost everybody has a phone, we have become addicted to doomscrolling, spending endless minutes or hours watching videos and looking at posts. Whenever we have a

break, whether that’s eating lunch, standing in line at a grocery store or late at night while laying in bed, spending our time scrolling though short videos like Iinstagram reels, Ssnapchat spotlights or TtikTtok videos has become a major part of our lives.

Each platform has its own unique features with these videos, bringing a popular debate to the table: Instagram Rreels or TikTtoks?

For many students, Instagram reels are the clear better option.

“I’d say Instagram [reels are better],” Lily Posky, a first-year occupational therapy major, said. “Usually the ones that land on my feed are funnier than what’s on my TikTok for you page.”

Many students agreed with this idea. While TikTok is often highly credited in trend setting and influencer culture, students agree that reels on Instagram tend to bring a more social atmosphere and are more entertaining.

“I also feel like people tend to check their instagram notifications more than their TikTok notifications,” Polsky said. “So I tend to send more reels to my friends than I do TikToks because I know that they’ll see them.”

Instagram’s social aspect is a major part of this debate. Even though TikTok has strong algorithms, Instagram’s higher use of direct messaging, sharing stories, and notification checking habits allows the watching experience to become much more interactive and engaging for many. This allows students to easily share funny videos with their friends.

But, TikTok still has strong support while doomscrolling. Its algorithms are very strong in giving people what they want to see, as well as introducing students to trends, consent creators and more. It’s another good option to discover new trends and pop culture references.

So, which is better? Instagram Rreels or TikTok videos?

It depends on your personal preference and what you look for while you’re doomscrolling. If you tend to enjoy quick laughs shared with friends, then Instagram reels are the way to go. But, if you’re more focused on the latest trends and curated feeds, TikTok is a better option. Or maybe you want to explore the less popular options like Snapchat Sspotlights or Youtube Sshorts. It’s all up to you.

But, no matter what platform gets the most votes, it is obvious that we aren’t going to stop watching any of these platforms for a long time.
