Club Feature: Etown Gamer’s Guild

If you have an affinity for digital adventures, Elizabethtown College’s Gamer’s Guild may be for you! Also known by its acronym EGG, the club boasts roughly 80 members in its Discord server, which all students are welcome to join.

Currently, the club’s president is the Etownian’s Assistant Sports Editor Neil Divins, who has participated in the Gamer’s Guild since its inception in the spring semester of 2022 and initially held the position of secretary. Bella Horgan, the Etownian’s Business Manager, Armin Reid and Isabel Mattivi serve as the other officers. The staff advisor is Katie Linebarger, an adjunct professor of psychology.

The Gamer’s Guild meets every other week at 9:30 p.m. in Nicarry 203. During meetings, members can expect a chill vibe with a chance to play some games with friends. According to Divins, there are about eight to 12 members that regularly attend.

Any multiplayer games are welcome, and meetings often feature multiple games happening at once so members can play whatever interests them most. Games like “Mario Party” and “Smash Bros” make frequent appearances, though the club branches out into different genres such as horror with titles like “Phasmophobia.”

“We’re just a nice little community for people to have a hobby that a lot of people on campus probably share,” Divins said.

Alongside meetings, the Gamer’s Guild has hosted several events throughout the course of the semester. “Most of the events end up primarily falling into two categories,” said Divins. “We’ve either had tournaments or we’ve had game nights.”

The game nights, according to Divins, are essentially expanded versions of the meetings. So, if you want to check out the club without fully committing to joining, the game nights are your chance. Highly popular games with opportunities for many players to participate at once, like the “JackBox Party Pack” series, are the ones most often enjoyed at these events.

Meanwhile, the tournaments are a little more formal. Students can sign up to compete against one another in set games. In the past, tournaments have included games like “Mario Kart” and “Smash Bros,” with the most recent event pitting players against each other during some exciting “Pokémon Showdown” gameplay.

“[I’m] forever grateful for the little community we have now,” said Divins. But even so, he hopes to expand the club to ensure it lasts beyond his graduation and becomes a staple part of Etown’s campus.

If you’re interested in joining, links to the Gamer’s Guild Discord server can be found on the club’s Instagram page, @etowngamers. If you don’t have Instagram, feel free to send an email to egg@etown.edu for an invite link or if you have any further questions about the club.

Most importantly, don’t wait to join! The club’s meeting times have varied between semesters, so you don’t want to miss any information about when and where to find EGG at the start of the fall semester. And, according to Divins, the club may host some online events over the summer, like a few rounds of “Among Us”, through the Gamer’s Guild Discord server, depending on its members’ interest.
