Women’s volleyball team competes in Landmark Conference Semifinals

On Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Elizabethtown, Pa., the Elizabethtown College women’s volleyball team’s season came to a close in the Landmark Conference Semifinals, falling to Scranton University, 3-1.
With the loss, the Blue Jays finished their season with 21 wins and eight losses while the Royals finished their season with a record of 25 wins and six losses overall.

Junior Bryanna Miller finished the night with a match-high 17 kills and nine digs, while junior Sarah Hanks registered a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Kambrie Hepler tallied a team-high 19 digs and senior Shelly Yohe recorded eight kills, nine digs and three block assists.

Etown started the match off strong, running out to a 7-1 lead after a kill from sophomore Giana Krinock.

The Blue Jays continued to attack, pushing its advantage to eight, making the score 14-6 highlighted by a kill from sophomore Katie Scaggs and an ace from Krinock over the final three points.

Scranton closed within six points (19-13) but no closer as Etown took the opening set in a dominating fashion, with a final score of 25-16.

The Royals responded in the second set, creeping out to a 12-9 lead after a kill from Carah Vitkus to begin the match.

Etown closed within one at 12-11 but the Royals wound up stealing back the momentum, going on a 6-1 run to move ahead 17-11.

Down 21-15, the Blue Jays continued to battle, rattling off three straight points to cut the deficit to three (21-18) after a kill from Yohe.

Scranton, however, scored four of the final five points to take the third set 25-19.

The Blue Jays scooted out to a 8-5 lead in the third set before the Royals rattled off four consecutive points to move ahead 9-8.

Etown tied the match at nine, 11, and then again at 13, but Scranton began to open up the score, moving ahead by six at 22-16.

The Blue Jays made one last strong run, closing within three at 24-21, but the Royals found the final point to move ahead 25-21.

In the fourth and final set, Etown once again took an early lead as Krinock smashed home a kill for the 7-6 advantage.

Scranton responded again though, scoring five straight to go up 11-7.

The Royals would ride the momentum of that run to take the fourth set 25-12 and the match 3-1.

Tonight was the final game for seniors Rileigh Hudock, Shelly Yohe, Ashley Snesavage, Elizabeth Zeiber and Marlee Dzergoski.
