On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the Elizabethtown College women’s volleyball team traveled to Scranton, Pa. to face off against the University of Scranton Royals. Etown wound up winning 3-1, and the ladies remain undefeated in Landmark Conference play.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 17 wins and six losses on the season and four wins and no losses in league play, while the Royals fall to 21 wins and five losses on the season and three wins and one loss in the Landmark.
Junior Bryanna Miller tallied her 10th double-double of the season, finishing with 13 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Katie Scaggs matched a career-high with six block assists while junior Sarah Hanks registered 26 assists, 13 digs, and four block assists. Sophomore Kambrie Hepler recorded a team-high 19 digs.
Down 8-5 in the opening set, Etown rattled off five straight points to move ahead 10-8. Hanks and Scaggs combined two blocks over this stretch.
Holding a two point lead (18-16), the Blue Jays put their stamp on the first frame, finishing on a 7-2 run to take the set, 25-18.
After Scranton evened the score at one by taking the second set, Etown retaliated in the third. Down by four early in the frame, the Blue Jays rattled off seven consecutive points to move ahead by three (9-6). Hepler tallied two aces over this run while Miller and Scaggs each had kills.
Etown continued to stretch its lead, pushing its advantage to six (13-7) after an ace from senior Shelly Yohe.
Scranton would close within three (15-12) before the Blue Jays erupted again, scoring seven of the next eight points to go up 22-13.
The Royals started to come back, but Etown found its final three points, capped off by a kill from sophomore Gianna Krinock for the final point of the set, giving the Blue Jays the 25-21 victory.
In the fourth and final set, Etown once again used a big run to pull away from the hosts, scoring six straight to take a 13-8 lead. Krinock had two kills during the rally while Miller tallied two aces.
Scranton cut the deficit to two (16-14) before the Blue Jays used its second 6-0 run of the frame for the 21-14 advantage.
Holding a 24-21 lead, Krinock would once again finish off the set and match, smashing home a kill for the 25-21 win and the 3-1 victory.
Elizabethtown returns home for senior day on Saturday, Oct. 23 for the team’s final tri-match of the year. The Blue Jays host Lebanon Valley College at 11 a.m. and Misericordia University at 3 p.m.
