On Saturday, Sept. 11 at Owings Mills, Md., the Elizabethtown College women’s soccer team faced off against Stevenson University. 90 minutes of soccer wasn’t enough time to decide a winner, and even the additional 20 minutes couldn’t separate Etown and Stevensonat the Mustang Stadium. The Blue Jays outshot the Mustangs with 27 to only seven shots on goal, but the game ended in a 0-0 tie in double overtime.
First-year Ava Whisten was the most persistent of the Blue Jays, taking a game-high nine shots, which was more shots than Stevenson took as a team. The first-year forward forced the first save of the game by Mustangs goalie, senior Keegan Caffrey in the 15th minute. A chance for Whisten later in the first half was also denied by Caffrey.
Etown did not allow a single shot to Stevenson over the first 45 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Trinity Soto made her first of two saves in the game early in the second half to keep it 0-0.
Caffrey had to come up big on shots from graduate student Janelle Barna and Whisten, about a minute apart. Whisten also had the Jays’ final opportunity of the second half, but Caffrey kept it out as regulation ended, still knotted at zeroes.
The Mustangs came out on the offensive to start the first overtime, outshooting Etown 5-1. Soto stopped the one shot that made it on frame in the 93rd minute.
Senior Marissa Lapinsky had a pair of chances to lift Etown to its first win of the season in the second overtime, first in the 102nd minute, and later with 29 seconds remaining. Caffrey, as she had done all game, made the saves to deny the Blue Jays.
Etown outshot Stevenson 27-7 overall. Caffrey made 10 saves to secure the tie.
The women’s soccer team remains on the road as they travel to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
