Women’s Golf scores new records at Albright College

The Elizabethtown College women’s golf team kicked off the start of their fall season this past week at Albright College. The women’s team competed in the Albright Invitational last Wednesday, Sept. 8 against 11 other teams, including Kutztown University and Lebanon Valley College. The Blue Jays finished with a score of +40, 113, resulting in a tie for 28th place.

The women’s golf team consists of two student athletes, Grace Flocco and Megan Yoder. Flocco, a sophomore occupational therapy major, appeared in seven matches during her first year. She finished with an overall stroke average of 109.5 and shot a career-low +37, 109 at the Landmark Conference Preview. Yoder is also a sophomore and is majoring in public relations. Throughout her first-year career, she competed in three matches, finishing with an overall stroke average of 104.75 for the season. Yoder shot her career-low last year at the Eastern Invitational with a total of +32, 102.

After the results from the Albright Invitational on Wednesday were announced, head coach Amy Kreider expressed the girls’ outcome was a surprise to all: “Both girls shooting the same score was pure coincidence, and we all had a good laugh about it after the round.”

After the match, Flocco and Yoder had the chance to discuss their scores. “I remember her [Yoder] coming off the course saying she played alright, and I told her me too,” Flocco said. “I was not expecting her to say the same score as me.” The girls congratulated each other with laughs and high-fives.

Up next, the women’s team will be heading to Hershey Country Club to host the Elizabethtown Fall Invitational on Sept. 14. “Each girl will have their own improvement plan before next Wednesday,” Kreider said. “They will both involve consistency and short game.” Our Lady Jays will tee-off at 1 p.m to start the Elizabethtown Fall Invite.

In addition, the women’s golf team is looking to expand their program. Anyone interested should contact head coach Kreider at kreideramy@etown.edu. She has great interest in discussing the team with those looking to join.

“Even though it’s just [Yoder] and I with the men’s team, they really are kind and supportive,” Flocco said. “We are a big family and always have fun together at practice.”
