Women’s Field Hockey triumphs over Wilkes

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team faced off against Wilkes University. This game was very eventful—not only was it the season opener for the field hockey team, but three different Etown players added a goal to contribute to the 3-1 win. The Blue Jays scoring play in the final five minutes of the game secured the win in the season home opener at Wolf Field.

Etown was barely ahead of Wilkes in penalty corners, with nine to Wilkes’ seven. However, Wilkes got the edge in shots, 11 shots to nine shots for Etown.

The Blue Jays held possession of the ball for the majority of the first quarter, taking seven penalty corners to start the game. However, they were unable to capitalize on getting to the back of the net. While Etown held most of the possession, Wilkes was first to take a shot seven minutes into the game. The Blue Jays took their first shot of the game a few minutes later but it was saved by the Wilkes goalkeeper.

In the second quarter, a shot by graduate student Grace Hardy was able to find the back of the net for Etown to score the first goal of the game. With Etown taking the lead over Wilkes with a score of 2-0 at the end of the half, the third quarter became more interesting as Wilkes put up their lone goal of the game.

Eight minutes into the third quarter on a wide-open run down the side, first-year Drew Bridges managed to sink a shot past the Wilkes goalkeeper for her first Etown career goal. About seven minutes later, the Colonels held the ball and after a rebounded shot, Wilkes was on the board.

At the start of the final quarter, Wilkes held the ball on their end of the field as they took two corners and one shot. A few minutes later, Etown took over following a corner and the Blue Jays were able to capitalize on one final goal. With five minutes remaining, senior Grace Hussey assisted teammate senior Chloe Smith for the Blue Jays’ third and final goal.

Etown will travel to McDaniel College on Saturday, Sept. 10 for their next game at 1 p.m.
