On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Elizabethtown College women’s field hockey team faced off against Drew College at home. It was a total team effort from the Blue Jays to achieve a 2-0 shutout win over Drew on Senior Day. Senior Grace Hardy had a goal and an assist for Etown in the win.
Etown celebrated their six seniors before this game. The seniors on the team are Grace Hardy, Anna Mostoller, Sierra Zittle, Catherine Amos, Emily Garvin and Janelle Nolt. All of these seniors have been starters for the Jays throughout the 2021 season. While not all the contributions on the field Saturday afternoon showed up in the box score, the seniors left their marks on the game.
Hardy and Garvin had shots saved in the first six and a half minutes of the game as they tried to give the Jays a lead. That lead came late in the first as Hardy pounced on a rebound in front of the goal to score her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Etown led 1-0 after the first period.
Though it was only a one-goal lead, the Blue Jays weren’t truly threatened on the back end. First year Angelina Giglio-Tos only needed one save, which came in the first quarter. The back line of Nolt, junior Chloe Smith and Amos held steady while Mostoller cleaned up a lot of things in the midfield. Zittle and Garvin were up and down the wings and Hardy provided the only goal they’d end up needing.
Junior Sydney Aguilar added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter to make it 2-0 just 1:34 into the fourth. Hardy dumped the ball into the circle and the junior was there in front of the goalie to poke it passed and into the cage for her third of the year.
The Blue Jays will be on the road Saturday, October 30 at the University of Scranton in non-conference action. The game is set to begin at 1 pm.
