Women’s basketball loses against Scranton

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Elizabethtown College women’s basketball team faced off against the University of Scranton’s women’s basketball team. The game got off to a slow start but it turned into an eventful game in the fourth quarter, and Etown ultimately came up short against Scranton, with a final score of 64-55. Blue Jays sophomore Veronica Christ led all scorers with 21 points in the game.

Scranton with 21 wins and two losses, was hot out of the gate, making six of their nine three-pointers in the first quarter as they got out ahead 22-12. Etown struggled in the beginning, but went 9-for-13 from the foul line. Christ and teammate sophomore Jessica King combined to go 7-for-9 at the free throw line in the first quarter.

Christ, first-year Summer McNulty and sophomore Cyleigh Wilson combined to score 18 of the team’s 20 points in the second quarter as they got within seven points by halftime, 39-32.

The Blue Jays held the Scranton Royals to 13 points in the third quarter, but were still struggling offensively, only putting up nine shots and trailing by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter.

A three point shot from Bridget Monaghan gave Scranton a 14-point lead, 57-43, with 8 minutes and 57 minutes left in the game. Etown clamped down, not allowing the Royals a single point for over five minutes. Christ and McNulty helped get the Jays within eight, and following a traveling violation on Scranton, first-year Lindsay Boyd’s layup cut the point deficitto six with 4 minutes and 27 seconds to go.

McNulty knocked down another jumpshot a few possessions later to further reduce the point deficit by five. Then, with 1 minute and 46 seconds left, Christ drove baseline and found King on the opposite block for the left-handed finish and Etown was down by just three points, 58-55.

The Royals were able to hold off the Blue Jays over the last minute as Etown couldn’t get the shots to fall. Abby Anderson, an Athlete from Scranton hit down six foul shots over the final 1 minute and 22 seconds and Scranton remained unbeaten in the Landmark with the 64-55 win.

McNulty was also in double figures for Etown with 13 points. First-year DaniRae Renno had a team-high nine rebounds.

The women’s basketball team faces off at Susquehanna University on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
