On Saturday Nov. 13 in Lancaster Pa., the Elizabethtown College women’s basketball team defeated Haverford College. Four members of the Etown team reached double figures in a 66-57 win over Haverford on the first day of the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament at Franklin & Marshall. Graduate student Veronica Christ and teammate first-year DaniRae Renno led the way with 17 points each. The win was also victory number 1,100 in program history for Etown, who became just the second women’s program in Division III to reach the milestone (Husson).
Sophomore Cyleigh Wilson and Christ carried the Blue Jays through the first quarter as each player recorded eight points apiece and Etown (2-0) took a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
Renno put up nine of her 17 points in the second quarter, accounting for nearly half of Etown’s points in the period. Wilson knocked down the team’s lone three-point field goal of the quarter and paced the Jays into halftime with a team-high 11 points. Etown led 38-28 at the break.
Etown shot 75 percent in the third, 8 for 12, and evenly spread out the scoring. Christ had five while sophomores Jessica King and Emily Prowell along with Renno each added four.
Haverford (1-1) grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the final quarter and ended up 12 more shot attempts than the Blue Jays in the fourth, but the Fords only shot 25 percent from the floor, including 0-for-7 from three-point range. Though Etown only scored nine in the quarter, their defense and foul shooting wrapped up the 1,100th win.
Elizabethtown hit 19-of-26 free throws while Haverford finished 7-of-14 from the foul line.
Renno recorded her second straight double-double after hauling down 13 rebounds, Wilson had 13 and a pair of scored shots, and Prowell hit double digits with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Christ also had eight boards for Etown.
The women’s basketball team will face host F&M tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
