Video Game Review: Wii Sports Resort Archery

“Wii Sports Resort” is a Nintendo Wii game that was released in the summer of 2009. This game is the sequel to Nintendo’s “Wii Sports” that was released three years prior. This collection of sports games is set on the fictional Wuhu Island and has 12 sports to choose from. One game from “Wii Sports Resort” that is very interesting to play is the archery game.

The instructions for archery are very straightforward and easy to follow for any player at any age. This game, like the many other games in “Wii Sports Resort,”  allows you to select a “Mii” character, if you are left or right-handed and has three difficulty settings. There is “Beginner,” “Intermediate” and “Expert.” Each player uses the “Wiimote,” or a Wii remote, and the attaching piece, the “Nunchuk.” There can be up to four players and you can either all pass around one Wiimote and Nunchuk or each player can use their own. You hold these remotes vertically just like how you would hold a bow. The Wiimote represents the bow, and since you pull back the Nunchuk, it represents the string.

The main goal, just like real-life archery, is to score the highest points on your target as possible, or at least score more than your opponents. There are three different levels “Beginner,” “Intermediate” and “Expert.” On each level, the player has three tries to score points. Every bullseye is 10 points, and the highest overall number of points to achieve in the game is 120.

Another reason why this archery video game is just like archery in real life, is that the game considers wind direction and varying speeds, which can alter the player’s aim. Also, as the levels move on, the wind becomes more intense, as the stakes for points and difficulty do as well.

What makes this game even more unique is its hidden targets that are found in each round and in each difficulty level of the game. Most hidden targets are fruits, and are placed in secretive spots in each game, like behind a waterfall, under a tree, on top of a cliff and other places you normally wouldn’t catch if you played the game with the bullseye in mind.

Overall, the archery game is a great addition to “Wii Sports Resort.” With its easy use and different amounts of levels this is a good game for players of all ages. Along with levels, it is also satisfying to win points from the secret targets on every level which can help improve your play, since you are still aiming with different wind controls. While this game is now over a decade old, the game does not seem outdated or have any issues. It is timeless and one of the unique parts of this game, which is why I highly recommend playing.

Archery is just one of the many options “Wii Sports Resort” has to offer.
