For fans of Electronic Arts (EA) and Maxis’ “The Sims,” you’re in luck! “The Sims 4” on Oct. 18 became free to all users on every platform. This is a dramatic shift from its original price of $59.99 in 2014, which dropped to $39.99 two years after its release.
“The Sims 4” is a life simulation game that is part of a franchise started in 2000 with the release of the original “The Sims.” It’s a sandbox game, which means it lacks any true objective. Players choose the route that their Sims’ lives take. From what their physical features are to their outfits to the place they live to relationships they build, players have control of it all.
Don’t fear, though. EA and Maxis are still making profit with the downloadable content (DLC) they have available to enhance “The Sims 4” playing experience. There are four different types of DLC: expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs and kits which are sold for $39.99, $19.99, $9.99 and $5 respectively. As the price increases, so does the amount of stuff included in the DLC. For example, an expansion pack, the most expensive DLC, is the most fleshed out with new gameplay experiences, a new world (except in the case of “Seasons”), Create-A-Sim content and build items. The more affordable kits, on the hand, usually only include around twenty items and have yet to have a new world in them.
Long time “Sims” fans will argue that DLCs are necessary for the game to remain fun and interesting. However, with 12 expansion packs, 12 game packs, 18 game packs and 17 kits, it can cost a pretty penny to own all “Sims 4” content.
Players can download “The Sims 4” base game for free on the EA app for Windows, Origin app for Mac computers, Playstation, Xbox and Steam now.
