The March Madness hype begins

As we are approaching the middle of March, to some this may seem just like any other month, but for NCAA basketball fans, it is finally the long-awaited March Madness season. Going into the 2022 March Madness tournament, there has been a lot of excitement, as the last “normal” tournament was back in 2019. In 2020, the tournament was canceled altogether and in 2021, there were many restrictions in place for athletes, fans and coaches. This year, there are no COVID-19 restrictions set in place for the tournament and people are starting to feel a sense of normalcy in the sports world again.

The tournament began on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:40 p.m., where Texas Southern took on Texas A&M, and later at 9:10 p.m. when Wyoming and Indiana went head-to-head. The First Four  concluded on Wednesday night, which is when the final 64 teams are picked. The Final Four game is scheduled for April 2 and the national championship game will be on April 4.

The excitement around March Madness is even present on the Elizabethtown College campus, as clubs and organizations are sponsoring events to get everyone involved. For example, the Class of 2024 Senate is sponsoring a March Madness Bracket Tournament. Head of the ‘24’s Events Committee Karlie Fromm gave a highlight of what is planned for the tournament.

“At the beginning of February, we started planning for March Madness. We wanted to try to incorporate the campus community by having them donate prizes,” Fromm explained. “We had the Rec Well, Dining Services, Alumni Relations, the College store and Admissions all donate prizes to help us compile baskets for first, second and third place,” Fromm said.

The Class of 2024 Senate is hopeful that this event will get students involved who may not typically participate in too many campus events, as it will appeal to many different audiences. Not a big sports fan? No problem! The bracket has the capability to randomly pick teams if that is preferred. Note that it is completely free to sign up so why not sign up for the chance to win some great prizes!

“We are really excited to see how it goes this year and hopefully we can have a great turnout, but all-in-all, it’s just a way to engage the campus community,” Fromm said.
