NFL Conference Championships excites the fans

This past Sunday, January 30, was an electric showing of football, as the NFL Conference Championships did not disappoint viewers.

The Los Angeles Rams narrowly defeated the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC Championship. Similarly, the Cincinnati Bengals won in overtime, beating the favorited Kansas City Cihefs to win the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship. The stage is now set for a Rams vs Bengals Super Bowl in two weeks.

The Rams won in a come-from-behind fashion, as they trailed the 49ers 17-7 entering the fourth quarter. Although the Rams did score first, the 49ers went on a 17-0 run that started in the second quarter. This set the stage for the Ram’s fourth-quarter comeback.

Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Rams quarterback Matt Stafford completed a touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, making the game 17-14. This was Kupp’s second touchdown of the game. A field goal by the Rams with seven minutes to go tied the game up at 17-17. With just three minutes left in the game, the Rams once again had the ball. Stafford completed yet another big pass to Kupp to put the Rams in field goal position. With just under two minutes the Rams kicked a field goal to take a 20-17 lead. The game ended with a Rams interception to end the game, and the Rams are now on the way to Super Bowl LVI.

This game may have been a wild one, but the earlier 3:30p.m. game between the Chiefs and Bengals was arguably even more electric. Quarterback Joe Burrow and his Bengals got off to a slow start, as they did not get a first down in the first nine minutes of the game, but they were able to salvage a field goal out of the first quarter, and the game was 7-3 with the Chiefs in the lead. The Chiefs put up 14 in the second quarter, compared to only 7 by the Bengals.

In the second half Burrow started finding his receivers, and the Bengals put up 11 points in the third quarter. The Bengals defense was strong in the second half and limited the Chiefs to just three points the whole half, and no points in the third quarter. Ja’Marr Chase had a big second half that included a touchdown in the third quarter that was set up by a Bengals interception. This play tied up the game at 21-21. A field goal by each team in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime, as the game was tied up 24-24.

Three plays into overtime, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw another interception, which meant that any kind of a score by the Bengals would end the game. Surely enough, the Bengals marched down the field and set up a 31-yard field goal that was completed to end the game and send Cincinnati to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LVI will take place Sunday, Feb. 6th, at 6:30. Currently, the Rams are favored to win, but no one is counting out Burrow and the Bengals.
