On Friday, October 9 in Huntingdon, Pa., the Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team faced off against the Juniata College Eagles. The Blue Jays remain undefeated in Landmark Conference play, topping Juniata, 3-0.
With the win, the Blue Jays’ record improves to eight wins, two losses and one tie overall. They have three wins with no losses or ties in the league.
Senior Garett Winchilla and first-year Pedro Guizardi both scored for Etown, while first-year Luke Kelly tallied an assist.
After a scoreless first half, the Blue Jays found its open strike. Junior Mehluko Letsoalo took a free kick from the right side of Juniata’s attacking defender. He whipped a dangerous ball into the center of the box where an Eagles’ defender attempted to clear it, but accidentally put it in the back of their own net in the 63rd minute, giving Etown the one goal advantage.
About five minutes later, the Blue Jays found their second goal of the game in a more conventional way. Kelly beat his defender on the end line and passed a cross to Guizardi at the back post. The first-year took one touch and easily placed a shot into the open goal for his second of the season and a 2-0 lead to Etown.
Winchilla wrapped up the win in the 85th minute, stepping up and burying a penalty kick into the right side of the goal to finish off Etown’s 3-0 win.
Junior Kelvin Del Cid earned his fourth shutout of the season, making five saves for the clean sheet. Del Cid has not allowed a goal in his last 258:45 minutes of work.
Anru Submramanian, the keeper for the Eagles, made two saves in the loss.
Elizabethtown hits the road on Tuesday, Oct. 12 to take on Muhlenberg College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
