On Jan. 15 at the University of Pennsylvania in the Palestra, the Elizabethtown College men’s basketball team lost to Juniata College with a score of 66-53 in the Landmark Conference play.
The first half started intensely as just three minutes into play, Etown led by one basket after a three point shot by junior Tyreke Herbert. After that, Juniata began to pull away slightly until junior Malik Hudges brought the score back within one point, bringing the score to 10-11. Halfway through the first half, the Juniata Eagles sank a three point shot, causing them to lead by three points–that is, until senior Dylan Rowe brought the Blue Jays in front as he dropped in two layups in a row. With six minutes remaining in the first half, junior Niko Georgelis scored a layup tying up the score, making it 20-20. In the final six minutes of the half, Juniata started to pull away and going into halftime, Etown trailed 33-28.
Juniata kept their momentum going as the second half began. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-point lead at the 16 minute and 13 second mark. The Blue Jays only made a layup in the first 10 minutes of the second half until Herbert made a free throw at 9 minutes and 5 seconds. Later, four points from sophomore Rance Russo brought the score to 42-53. The Eagles kept rolling, as after a good jumper, they led by 21 points with two minutes remaining. The Blue Jays ended the game with free throws from first-year Reese Ziegler.
Rowe led the game with 20 points and seven rebounds as he went 10-16 in field goals. Russo added nine points and six rebounds while Herbert added seven points, two steals and a block. Etown shot 35.5% from the foul line with 36 points in the paint.
Etown moves to 7-7 overall after this game and 1-3 in the Landmark. The Blue Jays travel to Huntingdon, Pa. this Wednesday, Feb. 1 to face off against Juniata again at 7 p.m.
