On Tuesday Nov. 9, in the Elizabethtown College Thompson Gym, the Etown men’s basketball team scored more than 100 points for the first time since the 2010-11 season, as the Blue Jays prevailed over Penn State Berks, 102-64.
With the win, Etown starts the season with one win and no losses and the Nittany Lions fall to no wins and one loss.
102 points is the most points scored by the Blue Jays since Jan. 10, 2011 when Etown topped Rutgers-Camden, 108-65.
Senior Jalin Robinson led all scorers for Etown with 21 points. First-year Rance Russo scored 14 points, while teammate first-year Jadon Green scored 11 points. First-year Alon Gorham scored 10 points for the Blue Jays.
Junior Jeff Lorah paced Penn State Berks with 19 points.
Etown jumped out to an early lead in the first half of the game as senior Aidan Trynosky found Russo for the three for the 9-5 advantage. The Blue Jays continued to press as sophomore Tyreke Herbert stole the ball and started the break the other way. Gorham finished off the fast break with a layup and the 23-12 lead with 12:30 on the clock.
Etown continued to have a huge lead over the Nittany Lions, as Russo grabbed a rebound and found sophomore Jared Archer for a jump shot and the 19 point advantage, making the score 41-22 with Etown in the lead. With just over five and a half minutes to play in the opening half. Herbert made one final three point shot at the buzzer to give the Blue Jays a 58-31 lead going into the locker room.
It was more of the same in the second half as Herbert drained a jumper in the paint to move in front by 40 points, making the score 73-33 with 10 minutes and 48 seconds left in the game.
Etown continued to dominate, pushing its lead to as many as 44 to take the season opener 102-64. Green highlighted the final stretch of the game, throwing down two thunderous dunks to put an exclamation point on the win.
