Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse find mixed results over the weekend

This past Saturday, April 6, the Elizabethtown College men’s and women’s lacrosse teams faced off against Drew University, with the women’s side at home and the men’s team traveling to New Jersey to meet the Rangers. The men’s squad put up a 20-6 victory and moved to 5-5 on the season, but the women would unfortunately drop a tough one 11-24, now sitting at 4-5.

The men’s side soared to a quick lead and dominated from there on out. Graduate student Riley Langen showed out early and often, finding the back of the net six times in this one. This fast start saw Etown set the tone after one quarter of play with Langen being the main culprit and would not be stopped.

Etown went back to their dominant ways in the second, outsourcing Drew 4-3 in the second quarter. While Drew tried to shift the momentum with a three goal swing, the Blue Jays settled back in with first-year Tristan Coleman scoring two goals to close the half.

Etown continued to fly through the rest of the match, as they’d score nine of the next eleven goals to make the final score 20-6.

The women’s side struggled throughout the day, as Drew came onto Wolf Field on fire and beat the Jays 24-11. Etown went down within minutes and would not get back into this one. Fourth-year Sam Deiaco was a star for Etown and her goal in the early going gave the Blue Jays some hope, trying to shift the momentum, but Drew’s 10 goal first quarter effort proved to be too much.

In the second, Drew continued their dominance. The Blue Jays would once again find success by way of Deiaco, who scored her second and third of the day, good for a hat trick. However, Drew had already pulled out to a 15-5 at the half.

The third quarter saw a continued strong effort from Deiaco, as she tried to will Etown back into it with a fourth goal.. However, Drew put this one out of reach with a 21-7 lead that proved to be insurmountable. While the Blue Jays scored three straight in the last quarter, Drew wouldn’t stop putting on a suffocating offensive effort. Third-year Megan Gress fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 24-11, but that’d be all she wrote.

The Blue Jay lacrosse teams return to action against Moravian University on Wednesday, April 10, with the women away and men home, both at 4 p.m.
