On Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Grantham Pa., the Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team faced off against a relentless Messiah College attack all night, battling to a 0-0 draw in the annual Marshmallow Bowl game.
With the tie, the Blue Jays record changed to four wins, one loss and one draw on the season while the Messiah Falcons, who are currently ranked fourth in Division III in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, remain unbeaten at 4-0-2.
This match between Etown and Messiah is only the third tie in the rivalry. The rivalry dates all the way back to 1980. The Marshmallow Bowl is a unique tradition in college athletics. For nearly thirty years, fans from both Etown and Messiah College have thrown thousands of marshmallows onto the field during the annual faceoff.
After a scoreless opening half, Messiah started playing even more aggressively in the second half, outshooting Etown eight shots to just one single shot. The Blue Jays still held strong only allowing one of the eight shots to be on goal.
Once the game ended with a draw of 0-0, overtime began. In overtime, Messiah managed to take six shots but were unable to score as the Etown defense earned its third consecutive clean sheet and fourth overall, tying Messiah 0-0.
Junior Kelvin Delcid made three saves for the Blue Jays. Delcid has only allowed two goals on the year and is second in the Landmark Conference with a 0.47 goals-against average.
Senior Jared Pavlovich was not forced to make any saves for the Falcons in the draw.
Etown continues Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 6 when they take on Penn State Berks on Ira R. Herr field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
