Sports are an integral part of lively campus life at Elizabethtown College. While not everyone may be able to play professionally, intramurals are a relaxed sport anyone can participate in, and each practice is a chance to meet new people. Several intramural players had some thoughts and advice on the current state of sports at Etown and the challenges that may arise.

Sophomore Matthew Fick played intramural basketball and club soccer last year and is participating in cornhole this semester. When asked about any new challenges that may arise with COVID-19, he mentioned that there would be no soccer or basketball due to the dangers of contact sports during this time. As for whether intramurals would be much different from last year, Fick mentioned how there is “[a lot of] emotions of playing a sport… You get hyped, but wearing a mask takes away from it [when cheering and communicating with the team].”

Senior Erik Frennborn has also been a dedicated member since his first year at Etown, as he has participated in intramural basketball and is joining cornhole this year. Frennborn echoed a similar sentiment to Fick when discussing the challenges: “It’s not the same intramurals as last year,” he stated. “Cornhole is not the same 5-on-5 [teams].”

Both players encouraged anyone who may be on the fence about joining intramurals to give it a go. Fick advised to “Give it a try… learn the basics of the sport so you kinda have an idea going into it… Just to be exposed to different kinds of people” and mentioned how intramurals were fun “primarily for the social aspect.” Frennborn likewise suggested to “join with a group of friends” and mentioned for anyone who is competitive, there is always playoff basketball for any intramural team that is good enough. For anyone unsure of joining intramurals, there’s plenty of reasons to gather a team and give it a try.
