The 2022 Winter Olympic Games took place in Beijing, China this year from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20, and in that time the United States made history. In Women’s Hockey, the U.S. received silver, just barely losing to Canada in the gold medal game. In Women’s 30km mass start free cross-country event, Jessie Diggins received silver, becoming the first non-European to ever win a medal in this event. In Men’s Figure Skating, Nathan Chen not only won the gold, but also set a new men’s individual event high score with 113.97 points.
The U.S. Women’s Hockey team gave it their all, but eventually lost to Canada 3-2. 13 members of the U.S. team won gold four years ago, and as the defending champions, they were clearly disappointed by the defeat. The U.S. team won five of their seven games, their defeats coming from the Canadian team. However, with such a close game, the U.S. team earned their silver medal.
Diggins gave the U.S. a lot of firsts in the Olympics this year. In the Women’s 30km mass start free cross-country event, she received silver, ending with a time of 1:26:37.3. Diggins not only became the first non-European to ever win a medal in this event, but she also won a bronze medal in the sprint finals two weeks before. However, the most impressive part of Diggins’ silver is that she earned it only 30 hours after recovering from food poisoning. After finally crossing the finish line, Diggins collapsed, ecstatic from the race.
U.S. men’s figure skating saw a new record as well, as Chen set a new men’s individual event high score with 113.97 points. It was not only a record for the U.S. but for the world as well, having the highest score in the men’s short program in the Winter Olympics. After coming in 17th place just four years ago, this is a great success for Chen. Chen was also a part of the silver medal team event, bringing in two medals for the U.S.
