Saturday, April 3 at 11:10 p.m., one of the most remarkable buzzer beater basketball shots was taken. Freshman point guard for the Gonzaga Bulldogs Jalen Suggs sank a half-court heave in overtime to send the team to the NCAA Basketball National Championship over the UCLA Bruins. In a blur of emotion, Suggs ran over to a nearby press row and celebrated on the table, with his teammates at his side.
“Man, I don’t have any words to say right now,”the first-year player remarked on the miraculous shot. “I mean, it was nuts, I have so many things going on in my head. I just can’t believe that happened.”
“We were lucky enough to hit a 50-footer,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “So, it helps when you have a magical, special guy like Jalen, special at the end of games.”
This thriller in the national semifinal was arguably the best game of the tournament, and despite possibly being eliminated, it was one of the best endings in the history of March Madness. The 1-seed Bulldogs kept their perfect record alive at 31-0, reaching their first championship game since 2017. They faced off Monday, April 5 against top seeded Baylor Bears in hopes of winning a National Championship.
