Wednesday, Oct. 9, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team faced off against York College of Pennsylvania. The team traveled to York where they played hard but walked off the field defeated 2-0. They only had five shots at the Spartans’ goal in the entire game, and none of them resulted in a score.

The opening goal was scored by Mya Gerena for the Spartans after a pass that was sent by Meghan Heary. The Spartans took the lead over the Jays in just over five minutes into the second quarter.

At the end of the half, the Spartans were leading 1-0. Etown threatened early on in the third quarter after a penalty corner. However, in the fourth quarter of the game, Dana Meehling scored the final goal, causing an even bigger lead against the Jays. The final score was 2-0, Spartans.

Later that week the team faced off against Drew University on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Jays played aggressively, which earned them the win.

The game started out slow for each of the teams, but it quickly picked up after a few minutes. First-year Madeline Kachel made her only save of the game in the first five minutes. Then, at about seven and a half minutes into the game, junior Bethany Gayman took a shot, which was denied by Drew’s goalie Joie Slossar.

The ball rebounded, and Gayman got the rebound and shot again. This time, the ball went in, securing the first and only goal of the game for the Jays.

There was an incredible play when Drew’s  Trisha Dominick shot against Kachel, and the ball bounced off the inside post, but it didn’t go in because there were no other Drew players to collect the rebound.

“There was a lot of good ball movement, good offensive movement and communication,” alumna Kendie Hudson, former field hockey player and fan said when asked about the game.

The final score of the game was 1-0, Etown. It was Kachel’s first career shutout.

“We tried out an ex[erimental formation, but we didn’t play the best game. Yet we still won,” junior Emily Garvin said after the game, when asked how this game compares to other games against Drew earlier in the season.

The Jays will be on the road for their next game facing off against the University of Scranton Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
