Saturday Sept. 4, the Elizabethtown College women’s field hockey team with only one win (1-0) faced off against Hood College with two losses (0-2) on Wolf Field
During the first half of the game, [year] Sydney Aguilar scored her first career goal and first-year Angelina Giglio-Tos earned a shutout in her first career start as the Blue Jays blanked Hood 3-0. Senior Grace Hardy and junior Chloe Smith also tallied in the game for the Jays.
There were only four shots between both Etown and Hood over the first two quarters of the game. Etown held a slim advantage in shots, 3 shots to 1.
The Jays got on the board not long into the third quarter. Aguilar, who missed her freshman season due to injury and with 2020 cancelled because of COVID-19, was playing in her first career field hockey game for Etown. The junior made a long-awaited debut worthwhile , helping to set up Hardy’s goal 1:38 into the third quarter.Nearly 20 minutes later, Aguilar was on the receiving end of a cross from graduate studentAnna Mostoller as Hood was unable to contain the ball off the corner. Mostoller pushed a pass toward the far post, where Aguilar was waiting to one-touch the ball into the cage. That made it 2-0 with less than 10 minutes to play.
Then, Smith sent a shot that beat Blazers’ goalie Richana Brown from the middle of the circle after beating a defender. This came off another corner for Etown.
The defense held strong throughout the four quarters, only allowing the one shot throughout the entire game. Giglio-Tos did not need to make a save to earn the shutout.
The field hockey team will be back at Wolf Field on Wednesday, Sept. 8, for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference matchup with York College of Pennsylvania.
