Etown Tennis wraps up regular season

Elizabethtown College’s tennis teams wrapped up their regular seasons this past Sunday on April 16 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Going into the day, the Blue Jays were matched up with King’s College and Rutgers University-Camden and hoped to end the season on a high note. The Blue Jays did just that, as both the men’s and women’s team recorded a win.

The men’s team went into Sunday winless, sitting at 0-10. They opened the doubleheader with a loss to King’s College 6-1. In the singles matches, the Blue Jays were unable to capture a win, but they wouldn’t go down without a fight. Sophomore Max Lauver fought hard in his match, coming up just short in both sets. He lost the first set 4-6 and pushed his opponent to the limit in the second set, but would lose it, 6-7. For the doubles matches though, it was a different story. After losing the first doubles match 2-8, Etown bounced back. Sophomore Sam Langer and junior Luke Paulson teamed up to take home Etown’s only match win, 8-5.

The second game of the doubleheader was against Rutgers-Camden and the Blue Jays finally picked up a win, 6-3, finishing the season with a record of 1-11. In the doubles matches, Langer and Paulson once again picked up a win and Lauver and first-year Isaac Reichenbach also notched a win. On the singles side of things, Lauver, Langer, Paulson and Reichenbach all found success in their matches, getting their second wins of the day.

The women’s team started their day with a win over King’s College, 6-3, picking up their sixth win of the season. Of the three doubles matches, Etown won two of them. Juniors Morgan Bleicher and Kaylee Mustard were clicking on all cylinders, playing a perfect match and winning 8-0. First-year Megan Hawkins and sophomore Adriana Burmeister were the other team to prevail, winning 8-5. Similarly, in the singles matches, Bleicher, Mustard, Hawkins and Burmeister would all capture another win, each going 2-0 in the matchup with King’s.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jays couldn’t make it two for two on Sunday, as they fell to Rutgers-Camden, 6-3. Hawkins and Burmeister once again proved to be a powerful duo in this one, winning a close one, 8-6. Then in the singles, Hawkins and Burmeister each won their respective matches in straight sets. Etown tried to keep it close, but they weren’t able to keep up, losing the season finale, capping their season record at 6-6.

While this is the end of the road for the Blue Jays and it wasn’t the season they had hoped to have, they each ended their season with a win, which gives them something to reflect highly on.
