The Elizabethtown College men’s and women’s tennis teams took the Alumni Courts at home on Tuesday, April 4 for their matchups against the Goucher College Gophers at 4 p.m. Going into the afternoon, the men’s team was looking for their first win of the season, sitting at 0-7 and the women’s team was looking to secure their sixth straight win, holding a record of 5-1. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, neither team had the day they were hoping for, each losing to a strong Gophers team.
The men’s team was unable to secure a set on Tuesday afternoon, losing 9-0. There were some interesting matchups on the court that day though, one doubles match and one singles match. First-years Isaac Reichenbach and Max Lauver teamed up in the first doubles match and showed some life for Etown. The team took three games in the one-set match but were unable to keep up with the Gophers in the end. Goucher College would take the match 8-3. Lauver also fought hard in his singles match that afternoon, pushing his opponent, Goucher’s junior Angel Cerpa, to the limit in the first set. Cerpa would outlast Lauver though, 7-6 in the first set. The second set would be the final set, as Cerpa won that one 6-0 and would take the game in straight sets.
This loss moves the Blue Jays to 0-8 on the season. Their next matchup is on the road against Drew University on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. in Madison, N.J. This game will mark their final Landmark Conference regular season match, before returning to out-of-conference play.
The women’s team also suffered a defeat against Goucher College on Tuesday, April 4, losing 7-2. This was just their second loss of the season. The team went winless in the three doubles matches but did find some success in the singles. Junior Madison Bleicher captured a win in her match. After losing the first set, Bleicher found her rhythm, winning the next two sets 7-5 and 10-7 to win the match. Sophomore Adriana Burmeister was the other Blue Jay to take home a win on the afternoon. Like Bleicher, Burmeister lost her first set, but fought back and would win the next two sets, 6-3 and 10-7.
This loss moves the women’s team to 5-2 on the season and to 2-2 in Landmark Conference play. They will look to recapture their momentum on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. against Drew University in Madison, N.J. for their final regular season Landmark Conference match.
