This past weekend didn’t go as planned for the Elizabethtown College Blue Jay Athletics. A packed road schedule from this past weekend ended in a few losses and a postponement.
Women’s Volleyball: The women’s volleyball team came into their match on Saturday in Owings Mills, Maryland, looking to extend their winning streak to four games in the doubleheader. Unfortunately, they ended the day losing both battles, falling to 8-6 on the season. The team kicked it all off in a match with Stevenson University. Stevenson was a dominant force in the first set and proved to be too much for the Jays. While sets two and three were more even, Etown wasn’t able to win either, falling in both 25-22.
After a shutout loss in the opening match, Lancaster Bible College was up next for the Jays. The bout opened up with another set loss for Etown, but the team quickly rebounded. They battled back with a 25-14 blowout victory in the second set and looked ready to take control. However, that was not the case, and Lancaster Bible showed out, taking the final two sets en route to a win.
After a long break, the team will get back on the court on Friday, Oct. 4 for a matchup with conference opponent Moravian University at home.
Women’s Soccer: The women’s soccer team headed to St. Mary’s City, Maryland on Saturday and lost to the St. Mary’s Seahawks 1-0. It was the team’s second loss of the season, moving them to 4-2-1 with a long way to go.
It was a superb defensive performance from both sides. Eight shots would find the target, but only one would find the back of the net. This one would come early on. In the eighth minute, St. Mary’s would quickly put one on the board. While the Blue Jays would fire off shot after shot, the goal would prove to be the deciding factor. It was one of just two shots on target from the Seahawks, while Etown mustered six shots at the St. Mary’s goalie. Each attempt was fended off though, a key catalyst in their win.
The Jays will get their chance to bounce back against Scranton at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Scranton, Pennsylvania
Men’s Tennis: While their Saturday game was postponed, the men’s tennis team was able to play on Sunday, squaring off against Susquehanna University. It was a close match, as both teams delivered, but Susquehanna ultimately won 4-3. Etown took two singles matches with sophomore Stefanos Billis and junior Max Lauver delivering in their respective games. In the doubles, senior Sam Langer and sophomore Ryan Kraychik forced a seventh set. Unfortunately, the Jays would lose this one, dropping their first game of the season.
Women’s Tennis: The women’s tennis team also took on Susquehanna University on Sunday. Their match ended in a 6-1 loss. Junior Haley Bishop notched the only win for her team, taking her game in convincing fashion. She won in straight sets, both by a score of 6-1. Both tennis teams will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. in matches against Wilkes University.
