Elizabethtown College come back against Goucher

The Blue Jays men’s basketball team faced off against the Goucher Gophers on Saturday, Jan. 31, in a contest that began sluggishly but ultimately turned into a dramatic second-half showdown, as Elizabethtown erased a halftime deficit to secure a hard-fought victory on their home floor.

The opening minutes reflected two teams still settling into rhythm, as both sides struggled to convert early opportunities. Missed three-pointers and contested layups marked a slow start before Goucher finally broke through. With 18:46 remaining in the first half, Goucher’s junior guard Darnell Morris Jr drained a three-pointer to put the Gophers on the board. The Blue Jays responded quickly. Junior Woody Machado answered with back-to-back three-pointers, assisted by seniors Reese Ziegler and EJ Finney, giving Etown a brief 6–3 advantage.

From there, the pace slowed into a defensive battle. Both teams tightened up on the perimeter and forced turnovers, making each possession difficult. Despite strong defensive efforts on both ends, Goucher gradually built momentum by continuing to attack offensively and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. Meanwhile, Etown struggled to find consistency, with several open looks failing to fall.

The Blue Jays generated chances throughout the half but could not string together scoring runs, allowing the Gophers to slowly widen the gap. By halftime, Goucher carried a 34–25 lead. While the nine-point deficit was manageable, the Blue Jays needed a shift in energy and execution to get back into the game.

That change became evident almost immediately in the second half. Etown came out playing with renewed intensity, pushing the tempo and attacking the basket. Machado again sparked the offense, knocking down a three-pointer early to cut the deficit to six and ignite the comeback effort.

Momentum quickly swung in Etown’s favor. Within the first five minutes of the half, the Blue Jays erased the deficit entirely, tying the game at 39–39. Moments later, Finney converted a layup off another Machado assist, giving Etown a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the contest.

The comeback was fueled by disciplined defense and smarter offensive execution. The Blue Jays forced key turnovers, limited Goucher’s clean looks and capitalized at the free-throw line to maintain separation on the scoreboard. Each defensive stop seemed to add confidence, while consistent scoring helped to quiet any hopes of a Gopher response.

As the final minutes ticked away, Etown maintained control, completing a second-half turnaround that showcased both resilience and teamwork. The victory improves the Blue Jays to 13-6 overall and 6-6 in Landmark Conference play, keeping them in the hunt as the regular season continues.

Etown now turns its attention to its next matchup against Drew on Feb. 4, where the Blue Jays will look to carry the momentum from their strong second-half performance into another important conference contest.
