Chiefs hoist Lombardi Trophy for 3rd time in franchise history

After a long, hard-fought season the Kansas City Chiefs are once again the kings of the National Football League (NFL) season and are your Super Bowl LVII (57) Champions! A season that culminated with a battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, the Chiefs are the ones that would come out victorious by a score of 38-35, reclaiming their throne just three years after their last Super Bowl win. And was it really a question of who the Most Valuable Player (MVP) would be? Of course, it was Patrick Mahomes who earned the Super Bowl LVII MVP honors. The leader of the team had his usual strong performance which included a 78% completion percentage, 182 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and 44 yards on the ground to help put the Chiefs back on top.

The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, doing what they had done on offense all season, capping off their opening drive with a Jalen Hurts rushing touchdown. This would become a running theme for the rest of the night. While the Chiefs immediately responded with a Patrick Mahomes to tight end Travis Kelce touchdown connection from 18 yards out, the rest of their first-half offensive production was lackluster. They were held to just one offensive touchdown heading into the locker room, and if not for linebacker Nick Bolton’s 36-yard scoop and score off a Jalen Hurts fumble, the Chiefs would have been hurting even more for points. Still, they found themselves down two scores going into halftime after Eagles’ kicker Jake Elliott poured another three points on with a field goal as time expired.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, they received the ball to begin the second half and took advantage of that. They marched effortlessly down the field, cutting the lead to just three after rookie running back Isiah Pacheco found paydirt from one yard out. If you are someone that enjoys rapid-fire offense, you may have found this quarter to be somewhat boring. The Chiefs and Eagles combined for just 10 points, trading long, tiring drives.

The fourth quarter was a fun one, but it was clear previous experience came into play. The Chiefs took the lead midway through the fourth, but the Eagles stuck around after Hurts hit wide receiver DeVonta Smith on a deep ball for 46 yards, and later rushed in the game tying touchdown and two-point conversion. However, Kansas City, having so much experience in close games and the postseason in general, seemed extremely relaxed. Patrick Mahomes sprained ankle and all, led an inspiring quarter, as he threw for two touchdowns and got his team into position for the game-winning field goal by way of his legs. Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker swept the leg and put the ball through the uprights to give the Chiefs their third Super Bowl win in franchise history.

Now, all teams can set their sights on the off-season and the 2023 NFL season. In this season, the Chiefs displayed that even without superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill, their team is still a force to be reckoned with, once again staking their claim atop the NFL world.
