Blue Jays sweep the Susquehanna River Hawks

Elizabethtown College’s baseball team had a big weekend as they won all three games in their series against the Susquehanna River Hawks.

The Blue Jays had a double header on Saturday, April 2, winning the first game 7-1 and the second game 3-2. Graduate student Tyler Dunbar pitched the first game giving up just one run in eight innings. Dunbar has had a great start to the season with an ERA of just 4.01. This week’s performance from Dunbar granted him pitcher of the week in the Landmark Conference.

Seniors Joey Thomas and Robbie Bertucio also had a strong first game, and both finished the game with two RBIs.

The second game was much closer, but the Blue Jays put together a win. Junior Nick Ortega got the win for the Blue Jays, pitching 7.1 innings with only five hits and two earned runs. The Blue Jays were up 3-0 entering the eighth inning, and the River Hawks did start to make a comeback, scoring two runs and making the score 3-2. Thankfully for the Blue Jays, the comeback fell short and the game ended with a score of 3-2.

Bertucio had another great game, as he went 2 for 4 at the plate and had an additional RBI.

The last game on Sunday was delayed due to weather, but the Blue Jays dominated the field again. They won 13-3, scoring five runs in both the seventh and eighth inning. Junior pitcher Zach Silfies got his first win of the season, coming into the game as a relief pitcher in the fifth inning. Bertucio had another stand out game, having three hits and another RBI.

Bertucio’s great weekend earned him the Landmark position player of the week, as he hit .571 and had a total of eight hits.

This big weekend puts the Blue Jays second in the Landmark standings, with onlyCatholic University ahead of them. The University of Scranton is only one game behind, but the Blue Jays beat them twice in the opening conference series this year.

This weekend the team will travel to Juniata College for a three-game series. Juniata is currently in second to last place in the Landmark and only has one conference win.
